Former radio host Antoinette Lattouf has leveled serious allegations against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), claiming her dismissal was influenced by a group of lawyers. Lattouf, who has a background in broadcasting and writing, alleges that ABC discriminated against her due to her Arab and Muslim heritage, as detailed in her complaint to the Fair Work Commission following her termination over social media content.
Recently surfaced WhatsApp messages from a group named Lawyers for Israel, consisting of 156 members, reveal ongoing efforts to pressure ABC management regarding Lattouf's employment. A lawyer in the group questioned Lattouf's role at ABC and hinted at potential legal action, emphasizing the importance of ABC perceiving a real legal threat. The lawyer mentioned the possibility of engaging senior counsel and suggested ABC should terminate Lattouf's employment, despite acknowledging the absence of a valid legal offense against ABC.
The group's discussions included criticisms of Lattouf hosting a radio show, with one member advocating for immediate action. Additionally, Robert Goot, the deputy president of the Executive Council of Jewry, reportedly indicated that Lattouf would no longer be on morning radio by the end of the week. However, it's important to note that the Lawyers for Israel group is not officially linked to any recognized Australian Jewish advocacy organization.
In these messages, Lattouf's lawyer, Josh Bornstein, who is Jewish, was wrongly labeled as a traitor. Bornstein commented on the disturbing nature of the lawyers' group's tactics, highlighting their intention to create a false legal threat to intimidate ABC. Lattouf observed that this strategy appeared effective, as her employment was terminated before she could secure legal representation and start her legal proceedings.
Lattouf has also criticized ABC for creating a hostile environment for journalists of color and claims that the network's strict policies, especially regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict, are prompting other journalists to consider leaving. She argues that her dismissal, along with others, has instilled a fear among journalists, hindering their ability to report impartially.
