A tragic incident unfolded as a 47-year-old woman lost her life in an encounter with the police, who were responding to reports of her allegedly wielding an axe and threatening individuals.
The unsettling episode took place at a unit complex situated on Mitchell Street in the Stockton suburb of Newcastle around 12:30 pm last Thursday.
According to reports, the woman brandished the axe, menacingly confronting officers before retreating into a unit, barricading herself inside.
Hours elapsed as she remained inside the unit until approximately 9:45 pm when the police managed to gain access and make an attempt to take her into custody.
The authorities, as reported by the NSW Police, explored several tactical options during this time, with a taser being among the methods used.
Following this ordeal, the woman was transported to John Hunter Hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
In response to this distressing event, a critical incident team has been deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman's demise.
